The Special Spectators events at the University of Illinois are not only popular among the kids and families who attend, but also the students. It's not unusual for the 100 patients, parents and siblings who attend each year to be outnumbered by the student-athletes and other organizations who contribute to the fun and entertainment at our tailgate party.

Note: Starting May 1st and continuing for the 123 days leading up to the start of the 2011 college football season, "Project 1-2-3" will share pictures, videos and memorable moments from the last nine years of Special Spectators game day events.
The 2010 Special Spectators game day event at Oklahoma State featured a growing friendship between a young cancer patient and an All-American football player.
Ten year old, Olivia Hamilton, first met Cowboy wide receiver, Justin Blackmon during a Coaches vs. Cancer event during the previous basketball season. The third grader from Sperry, Oklahoma immediately became one of Justin's biggest fans even before his breakout sophomore season.
In preparation for her big day at Boone Pickens Stadium, Olivia made a sign for her favorite Cowboy and left it, along with a personalized silicone bracelet, in his locker. Blackmon also made a point of stopping to talk to his biggest fan during the early stages of "The Walk".
Turns out the gifts in the locker provided quite the inspiration as Blackmon had six catches for 174 yards and three touchdowns on his way to winning the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's best wide receiver in 2010.
And what did Olivia discover when she found her friend on the field to sing the school's Alma Mater? Justin wore her bracelet during the game.

If you've been following "Project 1-2-3", you understand how important it is for seriously ill children and their families to attend Special Spectators events. But don't take our word for it. Here's what Dr. Mark Musselman, M.D, Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Carle Foundation Hospital and Clinic Association said about Special Spectators.
“I can tell you, quite certainly, that the children and their families had a terrific day away from the usual cares and worries of their weeks. The diagnosis of cancer and other serious blood disorders is a devastating moment and a long journey for all concerned, and events such as Special Spectators really are important ways in which families cope with the enormous demands that are placed upon them.”

The 2009 Special Spectators event at Oklahoma featured a star player, but in a different role.
The kids were anxious to see Sooners QB and 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, Sam Bradford, in action, but a shoulder injury suffered two weeks earlier meant that Sam wouldn't dress for the game. The Special Spectators still witnessed a Bradford performance up close. Sam, along with his five new friends, taped an introduction for FSN's telecast of the game.
